The Story of Truffle Trainer & Trufflemen

At Truffle Trainer, our passion for dogs, scent work, and truffle hunting has developed over decades of hands-on experience. Based in Lincolnshire and working throughout the UK, we specialise in truffle dog training, scent detection training, truffle hunting courses, and land assessments for truffle cultivation.
Â
Our journey into the world of truffles began with the remarkable Lagotto Romagnolo. What started as an interest in the breed quickly became a genuine passion. Through our dogs, we have travelled across Europe, met incredible people, and immersed ourselves in the traditions and culture of truffle hunting.
Â
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been learning from families and professional truffle hunters whose knowledge has been passed down through generations. Truffle hunting is far more than simply finding a valuable fungus; it is a tradition, a lifestyle, and a unique partnership between dog and handler. We have been fortunate to learn from some of the most experienced truffle hunters in Europe, gaining practical knowledge and insights that cannot be found in books alone.
Â
As our passion for the breed grew, we established Trufflemen and began breeding Lagotto Romagnolo dogs ourselves. Through careful selection for health, temperament, working ability, and natural scenting aptitude, we have developed a breeding programme focused on producing confident, capable dogs suitable for truffle hunting, scent work, and active family life.
Â
The Lagotto Romagnolo is widely recognised as the world’s premier truffle hunting breed. Their exceptional noses, intelligence, trainability, and enthusiasm for searching make them ideally suited to truffle detection work. Watching these dogs develop their natural scenting abilities and progress into skilled truffle hunters remains one of the most rewarding aspects of what we do.
Â
My own background in dogs began long before truffles entered the picture. For many years I trained Dobermans in IGP, the internationally recognised working-dog sport that evolved from German police and utility dog trials. While I enjoyed every aspect of the discipline, I was particularly fascinated by the tracking phase. Tracking requires a dog to follow a scent trail across varying terrain with accuracy, commitment, and intense concentration.
Â
Alongside my work in IGP, I became a NASDU-qualified handler. The professionalism, standards, and attention to detail required in the professional scent detection world have had a lasting influence on my training philosophy. During my qualification and throughout the years that followed, I had the privilege of learning from internationally respected scent detection trainers, gaining valuable knowledge in scent theory, odour recognition, indication behaviours, search patterns, training methodology, and canine olfaction.
Â
Over the years, we have also trained Lagotto Romagnolo dogs for bed bug detection work, further expanding our experience in applied scent detection. This specialised work reinforced our understanding of how dogs process scent and demonstrated just how versatile and capable the breed can be when given the right foundations and training.
Â
Looking back, it is easy to see how these experiences naturally led to truffle hunting. Whether in IGP tracking, professional scent detection, bed bug detection, or truffle hunting, the same core principles apply: developing a dog’s natural scenting abilities, building trust between dog and handler, and learning to understand and interpret what the dog’s nose is telling us.
Â
Today, Truffle Trainer brings together everything we love about dogs: scent work, training, breeding, truffle hunting, travel, education, and continual learning. Through years of dedication, we have built what is believed to be the largest truffle hunting pack in England and, to the best of our knowledge, the largest in the United Kingdom.
Â
We are proud of that achievement not simply because of the number of dogs involved, but because it represents years of commitment to the Lagotto Romagnolo breed, professional dog training, scent detection excellence, and the traditions of truffle hunting.
Â
Whether you are looking for truffle dog training, scent work classes, a truffle hunting course, advice on training your own dog, or a professional land assessment to explore the truffle potential of your property, we are here to help.
Â
Our mission is simple: to share our knowledge, experience, and passion while helping dogs and handlers develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the fascinating world of truffle hunting. Every successful search strengthens the bond between dog and handler, and we believe that partnership is the true reward of truffle hunting.
Â
From our home in Lincolnshire to truffle grounds across the UK and Europe, we remain committed to promoting excellence in truffle dog training, responsible Lagotto Romagnolo breeding, and the continued growth of truffle hunting in Britain.
